Bobby Investigates

There was only a short appearance by one Hedgehog on hoggy-cam last night. As the days are lengthening so the Hedgehog tends to arrive a bit later each night. When it came to our bedtime I was sure that it had gone elsewhere and that the alternating cycle of 2 then 1 appearing had been broken.

As soon as Bobby was out of the back door he sniffed the air and listened intently. After a few seconds he was off investigating the area under the bird feeders.

In a very short time he found what he had been seeking and there they were, not one but both Hedgehogs.

Bobby meets Hedgehogs

I think he was trying to work out which end was the head end, or maybe which end has less spikes. As before the small Hedgehog soon scuttled off at a fair rate of knots and the large one stayed put. So far I have not seen either of them curl up into a ball. Bobby is very good and leaves them alone as soon as he is called away. We toured the front garden as usual and by the time we returned to the back garden both Hedgehogs had disappeared.

  1. Nice photos of Bobby with the hedgehogs. A very obedient and well trained dog by what you say!

Lovely photos of 'creatures great and small'.

  3. Hi Mick: Thank you. Bobby was fairly obedient when he came from the rescue centre three years ago but like all animals there are those times when he gets sudden bouts of deafness. :)

Hi Jan: Thank you. The night photos are very much hit and miss as the view through the viewfinder is black until the flash starts firing short bursts so it can focus.

Lovely shot of them together like that.

  5. Thank you Keith. He's not bad most of the time. He doesn't want to leave his little friends but he does as he's told. Three years ago when he came from the rescue centre his instinct was still to chase and hunt any small animal.

  6. Hi again John :-)

Like Mick, I too am enjoying seeing the pics with your dog Bobby. It's great to see your video footage too. I wonder if you have a pair there? I also wonder if you have heard a hedgehog trying to mate before.

I didn't know that was what I heard at the time. I followed the loud noise then saw one run off... once heard you won't mistake it! I'm guessing Bobby might bark then ;-)

  7. Hi Shirl, I am not sure what the size differences are with hedgehog sexes. The other night there was some really loud snuffling. I wonder if that is what you heard. Also the large hog does seem to try getting round to the back of the little one but it always makes sure they stay head to head.
Last year I had two youngsters in the garden so there must be a pair nearby though I have read they can travel up to 2 miles a night looking for food.

  8. Wish our Lucy was good like Bobby, when she sees our resident hedgehog she wines and trys to turn it over!!

  9. Snowbabies: Bobby used to stand next to the Hedgehog and bark but he's stopped doing that. I should think the poor thing would have been deaf by now.
