Ladybird visitors.

There seem to have been more ladybirds around the garden this year than for many years. Here I only see the seven spot variety so they still have a good stronghold in this part of Lincolnshire. In spite of the chilly weather, as soon as the Sun warms up the air many come out from their hiding places and go in search of a few juicy aphids.

Ladybug
by Maria Fleming

Ladybugs all dressed in red
Strolling through the flowerbed.
If I were tiny just like you
I'd creep among the flowers too!

7 Spot Ladybird

Five Little Ladybugs
(unknown author)

Five little ladybugs, climbing on some plants,
Eating the aphids, but not the ants!
The first one said: "Save some aphids for me!"
The second one said: "These are tasty as can be!"
The third one said: "Oh, they're almost gone!"
The fourth one said: "Then it's time to move on!
The fifth one said: "Come on, let's fly!"
So they opened their wings and flew through the sky.

7 Spot Ladybird

Ladybird, Ladybird

(traditional nursery rhyme)

Ladybird, Ladybird, fly away home.
Your house is on fire and your children all gone;
All except one, and that's little Ann.
And she has crept under the warming pan.

A while ago Glo of Porcelain Rose left me a lovely ladybird poem which can be seen here.

  1. Oh, what a bright cheery post! ... and thanks for the link to my poem! I don't know where the time is going, but work is definitely interfering with my blogging and responses, although I do try to read them daily. I've enjoyed seeing your birds ~ nice to see the tree sparrows. A little family pf tree sparrows nested in the bird house atop the washing line pole. My tree sparrows were greenish, though. Now the nuthatches use the nesting site. Congratulations on your great coat of arms! Neat idea, and I can see how the crossed birds started your creative juices going. Of course, the hedgehogs may feel a little left out. ;) I hope your cat deterrent works. My next door's cat seems to like birds, also, and is often in my garden hiding under bushes close to the birdbath and bird feeders. How many actual devices do you have wired up now? Pretty soon, you'll be noticed from outer space ...LOL

  2. Thank you Glo. I know what you mean. When I was teaching there seemed so little time left in the week for other things.

After I had finished the C.O.A. I thought that there should have been a Hedgehog on it somewhere. Now I have upgraded to a better version of Paint Shop Pro I may well have a go at a Mk.2 version.

I daren't count all the devices plugged in here but I do know there aren't many empty sockets. :)

  3. Lovely post John.
They're a great asset in the garden.

Something I found out a while ago, that I never knew before; there are 46 ladybird species now found in Britain, but only 26 are readily recognisable as ladybirds.
Bit of trivia for a Sunday afternoon lol

  6. Hi Keith. I knew there were several but didn't realise there were that many.

  7. Hi Jan. Sorry to hear you had a miserable wet day. I daren't say how nice and sunny it has been here. Fortunately our recent rain has all been overnight. I though the verses would make a change.

  8. Thank you Angie. I usually enjoy making them though some fidgety creatures do drive me up the wall sometimes when they don't stay in shot for more than a second.

  9. Great post. We live in the heart of soybean farming. A number of years ago the Asisan Lady Beetle was imported to control soybean aphids, and apparently does a great job. But every autumn as the temps drop, the beetles sneak inside houses through cracks and crevices you didn't know existed. We have had thousands inside our house over just a couple of weeks' time. This year's invasion doesn't seem to be so bad, so far!

  10. Hi Wilma. Some creepy crawlies seem to find the smallest crevices and cracks to get away from the bad weather. This year I have been plagued by flies. I haven't seen so many for so long for ages.
