Friday at the Flicks (Pigeon Face Off, Blackbird, 480 mph Journey)

Many birds arrive for breakfast long before I wake up in the morning. Most of the time they keep out of each others way and get on with eating. There is one particularly bossy Wood Pigeon which does not believe in sharing and often uses its wings to keep others at a distance. I had to smile at this pair as they tried to outstare each other to get at the seed dish.

The Blackbirds are not singing as often as they did a month or so ago and it was unusual to catch one so low down. This time it is Bobby getting in on the act.

Yesterday I went for my usual monthly meal out with an old friend to one of the local hostelries. I had obtained an in car camera which I used to video the journey. Travel time was about 17 minutes so the video has been speeded up by 8 times so here is a very quick view of my area of the country though you may need a travel sickness remedy before you watch it. Speeded up 8 times means that speeds equivalent to 480 mph are achieved.

Hope the weather is as kind to you as it is here. Have a great weekend observing the wildlife around you.

  1. I just adore that film of the pigeons over the food! Like the gunfight at the OK coral at times! Defending valuable resources is one of the driving forces of all animal behaviour. The subordinate pigeon turns its body at the end just before it walks away. This is also seen in dogs as a sign of appeasement! Brilliant!

  2. Hi John, we got a great chuckle out of your clip of the wood-pigeons and in your blackbird clip, I am sure his song included what sounded incredibly like "woof woof woof woof" towards the end of the second section. Your in-car camera does a neat trick as well.

  3. Great fun at the flicks! Terrific pigeon interaction to catch; the song was lovely even with Bobby's try at harmony ;)

What I really enjoyed was racing through the countryside! Although I was born in England, and have visited several times, I have never actually driven there. One of my goals is to do so. Sometimes I find a youtube video of driving on the left hand side of the road, and I watch it so that I can picture myself in the driver's seat. I've watched your video a couple of times already and must admit I followed the wrong car around the roundabout ;) I'll have to watch it a few more times to get it right. LOL

  4. Hello Matron. I hadn't really noticed the over the shoulder look until you mentioned it.

  5. Hello Twosie. Yes. Bobby was getting in on the act but unfortunately he is tone deaf ;)

That was my first successful run with the car camera. I hope to get some video clips on the Lincolnshire Wolds one day.

  6. Hello Glo - disharmony I think you meant to say ;)

As you could see Lincolnshire's roads were not built for fast traffic. So many twists and turns. It often ends up at least double the straight line distance to get anywhere. All to do with the enclosure acts many, many moons ago when the land was first fenced off and boundaries had to go round church land and the Lord of the Manor's land.

It must be quite a challenge to have to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road and give way to traffic from the right at round-a-bouts, etc..

  8. The drive to the pub was quite hair raising John! When we started twisting and turning round the corners at breakneck speed I definitely felt the need for the travel sickness pills and I didn't really feel like looking at the lunch menu when we arrived at our destination :)

Great pigeon stand off, another very entertaining species! I always love hearing the Blackbird song and Bobby's attempt at harmonies were...well, interesting :)

  9. What a comical pair of pigeons. They spent more time arguing, than feeding lol
Lovely clip of the Blackbird, and that last clip was like playing one of those old racing games. Loved it.

  11. Hello Jan. I don't think I could ever have been a racing driver.

There is usually a pigeon stand off every morning.

  12. They do look comical Keith, the way they use their wings to shoo others away.
