Juvenile Goldfinch

It seems to have been one of those weeks or even fortnights. Very hard to get motivated. There has been very little activity in the garden especially since one of the local raptors appears to have caught a Collared Dove looking at the amount of grey feathers covering next door's back garden. That was a few days ago and since then the numbers of birds visiting has fallen right off.

These are a couple of photos I took when I made the video clip of the juvenile Goldfinch.

Today I ache all over as I spent a few hours yesterday assembling a couple of bookcases. Wouldn't you just know it - one had a few items missing so now I have to wait until the missing parts are sent before I can finish the job.

Sorry I haven't been looking at the blogs I normally follow. I hope to catch up with all your activities very soon.

  1. I think I was at the back of the queue when motivation was handed out :(

Lovely juvenile Goldfinch photos, John. It never ceases to amaze me how adept the Goldies are at getting the Niger seed out of those tiny holes, when I first bought one I was convinced they would never use it.

How frustrating to go to all the trouble of assembling something only to find some of the parts are missing (typical though!) I hope they get them to you soon.

  2. I'd never noticed those black and white layers on the folded wingtips. I suppose most people photograph them from the side. Very striking. Are those nigella seeds they are eating?

  3. It's good to take a break at times John.
Hope the aches and pains soon pass.

  4. Hello Jan. I get these periods where I just want to curl up and escape from the world but it passes eventually.

Like you I thought that the little slots in the feeder were very small but if a Goldie can pick seeds out of thistles I guess a little hole isn't much of a challenge.

The missing parts have been ordered and should be here soon - I hope!

  5. Hello Matron. Those white bits on the black always remind me of a tail coat with white buttons. They are eating Niger (Nyger) seeds. Here anyway that is all they will eat and they spend ages picking the little seeds out one by one. The ground gets covered with black husks.

  6. Hello Keith. Yes the remaining grey cell needs to rest and recharge from time to time. Aches slowly subsiding. The book cases were heavier than I expected.
