First Visit This Year

Up to something like eighteen months ago I used to have regular, often daily, visits by a Grey Squirrel. For some reason the visits stopped, until this morning when this character was seen eyeing up the Birdy Bistro. After a quick look it decided that it had better come back later when Bobby wasn't watching.

  1. It will trash your feeders. I quite like them though.

  2. What a great shot John... enjoy your squirrel - they're great characters - we have no squirrels here sadly - the red ones do exist but not v. often which is a shame. When I lived in Edinburgh was most amused to watch as a squirel appeared in the tree outside my bedroom window - along the branch above where I'd hung one of those mesh nut holders - he leaned over picked it up and knawed a dirty great hole in the bottom - let it go and climbed down to munch away on all the nuts which by then were scattered all over the ground... little monkey!! Sorry to have deserted blogging over the last number of months but work has kept me rather too busy.... hopefullly I'll get plenty of time to post over the winter - take care Miranda

  3. Well, a squirrel makes an entertaining, if not tasty snack for a lurcher!

  4. I enjoy my "sqirkels" as well. I live in a large metro area of Minnesota. My dogs are all since gone and my yard is now visited by wildlife that fear nothing, and stay now. A wide variety of colors visit my yard. Grey, Black, Albino and "Velvetta" (the same color of american processed cheese orange/yellow). I also have a parrot and was throwing away the remaining organic parrot food/pellets/seeds/dried fruit each day. I also bought outdoor bird food which makes a huge mess. I thought one day maybe the organic leftovers would be a treat for whoever ate it outside. Well, the squirrel visitors all have at least 4+" wide back haunches now. They are all wider than the 2x4 board they jump on to get in the tree and to their special leftover bowl.
If their BIG bushy tails are a health indicator they are doing very well. There are at least 2 of them patiently waiting for me each day right by the bowl. They only get the left overs now.

  5. Adrian: If they become regulars I normally put out a different peanut feeder in a different place for the squirrel.

  6. Hello Miranda. It was a lucky shot / pose as it was the only one I managed to take. They are great characters. Today I watched it take peanuts one at a time and bury them all round the garden. I hope it has a good memory.

  7. Matron: It is a good job for the Squirrel that Bobby has such poor eyesight these days.

  8. Hello Anon. Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment. I think they can get quite tame, or at least very bold. They do seem to have hollow legs when it comes to tucking in to the food.

  9. It's me from Minnesota,

The Velvettas' are very calm and tame. The grays are wild, rude, bold and a bit scary. They all hide on the back side of my tree in a rotted out knarl. Then they climb out, up, forward, and "POP" into the crotch of the tree.

On the other side of the tree is me climbing up towards the crotch of the same tree, my face and hand are also coming directly into the crotch at the same time and "POP" I"m there too, however I have the bowl.

I've also squealed/sucked air/backed up slowly/stumbled from squirrel fear. I think the mutual respect on both sides of that tree keeps us just enough away from each other.
