Who Will be the First?

An extra feeder put up yesterday. A new item from CJ Wildlife, my regular bird food supplier. This is a well built hefty metal bracket which holds a jar of peanut butter. These jars are filled with peanut butter which doesn't contain the salt the human variety has. There is a bolt at the top which is gently screwed down on the neck of the jar and stops it from falling out.

I wonder who will be the first to find,  investigate and try it out.
Although there is a bit of a 'perch' under the jar I think it needs a bit of tinkering as the metal coating is very smooth and slippery. Maybe a felt or rubber pad to give a bit of traction.

  1. Looks a brilliant bi of kit. Ask the postie for a couple of rubber bands. They would provide traction and save him chucking them all over town.

    1. Good idea Adrian. There are usually some to be found on our afternoon walk.

  2. John, your garden is rapidly becoming the bird equivalent of the RITZ in Lincolnshire.{:))

  3. What an excellent idea John and you have solved a problem for me :-) I wanted a jar of organic peanut butter so I could spread some in the cracks and crevices of trees in my garden to try and attract the Great Spotted Woodpecker which is an occasional visitor. However, though organic it contained salt so was no good. My husband suggested looking on bird food websites but I thought it unlikely they would stock such a thing. Therefore, I was thrilled to find this post and will order some very soon. I do hope you soon attract some visitors to yours :-)

    1. No takers yet Jan but it is early days. Pleased the item was of interest and use to you. Not cheap jars but seem comparable to the more expensive human varieties. They do two varieties - with and without mealworms. I must try spreading some of it on a branch or two. Maybe I'll add a short wooden 'ladder' beneath the feeder so woodpeckers can use it.
The feeder can be found here and there is a link on the page to the jars.

Maybe you could get HLH to make you one of these: ;>)

I might have a go at that.

  4. Well, that's quite the invention ~ I'm sure you will rig it up even better. I have imaginings of a beak stuck in the peanut butter with the bird attached at the back, like a dart. ;) I can't say I've ever seen a jar of peanut butter for birds here; I'll have to check. It will be interesting to see what visits the feeder.

    1. First time I've seen anything like that Glo, so worth a try. The peanut butter is very hard, not the type or spreading. Should make it last a bit longer. No takers yet that I have seen.

  5. Qa) Is the PB jar plastic or glass?
Qb) The screw to hold the jar in, is it slow to tighten/release? or just a few good turns?

    1. IamaBurdie: a) glass b) standard screw thread on the bolt, easy to get the right tension.

  6. Hi John, couldn't decide what I thought of this product when I first saw it on another blogger's post. I would guess Starlings could be a contender here but I'd also guess they'd have to see the Blue tit discover it first. As you know, I like to experiment with foods and feeders too. I'll read on...

    1. Too true Shirl. Starlings had no problem scoffing most of the contents though the Blue Tits did manage to get some.
