A Walk Round the Back of the Church

Another day of glorious Sunshine yesterday so I decided we would take a different route for our mid-day walk. I don't use the route round the back of the village church much at this time of year. A lot of the footpath is below field level and soon gets waterlogged, muddy and very slippery. Fortunately it wasn't too bad. The idea was to take another batch of monochrome photos but this time many of the results were disappointing. Walking in shade with bright light showing through leafless trees was too much contrast for the Nikon. Also shutter speeds in the gloom were really too slow for sharp results. Fortunately I also took a few colour snaps.

Looking back to the start of the footpath:

Penny looking forward to see where we were going. It was only the second time she had walked this way so everything was new, strange and very interesting:

.... and forward to the next part of the footpath:

Once we had reached the next lane we had a look to see if there were any horses in the meadow - yes, three. It may be sunny but they still need their winter coats on:

I am sure the one on the right is Angel. She was the mother of the foal, Fred, we watched a couple of years ago.  Photos and video of Fred can be seen HERE.

Finally we reached the main street and the lych gates at the entrance to the church:

With all the stops for me to take photos and for Penny to investigate it took nearly three quarters of an hour to cover a twenty minute walk but we were both enjoying the Winter Sun while it lasted.

  1. Nothing could cope with that John. I like the colour it produces. Be interesting to take the same shots when the trees have their new leaves. That always seems to test a camera.

    1. I've been trying to work out which colour it reminds me of - Agfa or Fuji?
It seems different to that produced by the Lumix. One day I must test them both out taking the same views.

    2. Not Velvia so must be Agfa. It has an antique look to it. Not that awful Kodachrome that is for certain.

  2. I can see from the last few posts that you have been getting some good and interesting results with the new Nikon John. Glad
Penny was able to discover a new walk. It did look very pleasant, so nice that you had some sun too :-)

    1. Hello Jan. Been lots of Sunshine recently. Really cheers me up. Still taking ages for the ground to dry out though.

    1. Keith - the colours seem more subtle than the Canon or Lumix. A bit more like some of the old slide film with a slight emphasis on greens.

    1. TWG: The gates are fairly new as the old originals were stolen. Whoever carved the replacements made a good job of it. Many, probably all, of our old churches have lych gates with a covered entrance - a place to rest a coffin in days gone by.

  5. That camera certainly produces some nice monochrome images John.

    1. It's a bit of an art with it Roy. I use spot focus and exposure control so move the camera view around to fins the best compromise on the LCD view and hope for the best. Sometimes it's a question of taking several at the same spot with different exposures as they always look different when enlarged compared with the small LCD view.
