RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch - Results

Nothing out of the ordinary while I did my hour stint on Saturday morning counting the maximum number of each type of bird which visited my garden.

Some of the regulars were missing from the count as they didn't arrive during that hour.

  1. Just started mine fourteen minutes ago.
    1 Rook
    3 Jackdaw
    2 Mallard
2 Robins fighting...I'll amend that to 1.5 Robins.

  2. Hi John,

Some interesting results there. 7 Blackbirds is really impressive, is that the kind of number you usually get? Great that you saw the Tree Sparrow too

Our Big Garden Birdwatch was pretty disappointing yesterday to be honest. Not sure why but our garden was very quiet in terms of bird activity at the feeders for some reason.

    1. Hi Joe.
I get up to 20 Blackbirds on Winter mornings. They have worked out where the free food is. In the Summer just the odd one or two.

  3. Hi John,

Some interesting results there. Impressive how you saw 7 Blackbirds on your count. Is that the norm for your garden? Also great that you saw a Tree Sparrow.

Our big garden birdwatch was a bit disappointing to be honest. We too were missing a few regulars and the feeders were pretty quiet all day. Not sure what caused it though.

  4. Very similar to my list but we had no rooks or tree sparrows but had a coal tit to make up for one of them.

The bullfinches and long tailed tits failed to put in an appearance!

  5. Sue: My Coal Tit and Great Tit didn't appear at counting time.

    1. Roy: Not so many Tree Sparrows here this year, just the occasional one or two. I think they come in from the local field hedgerows when times get hard and join in with the House Sparrows.

  7. Good species number, John. No tree Sparrow here, I've been looking for them with the snow as we've had them before. I did get something out of the ordinary (I had to refer to my book for an ID) but I'll keep you guesing there... before that I was thrilled the regular Bramblings turned up in my hour count :-D

  8. Good list John.
Amazes me how the birds seem to know when a count is in progress, and just hide.

Luckily my 3 recent 'stars' were at my count; Pied Wagtail, Blackcap, and Fieldfare.

  10. That's a pretty good count John! How I would love to have Tree Sparrow on mine :-) I wish I'd done my count yesterday when there was still a bit of snow left and when I had Brambling, Fieldfare, Redwing, Blackcap and Pied Wagtail although I suppose that wouldn't have been very representative really. Today the recent snow visitors were absent but I was pleased to see one of the Blackcaps right at the end. I thought the regular Great and Coal Tits and even the Robin were going to let me down but they all turned up near the end too. The Dunnock decided to stay off the list though!

    1. I'm sure it was more than usual here on count day Jan. I think the RSGB would be just as interested in the numbers of Winter visitors but it's always the same, never in sight when you want them. Haven't see a Blackcap for a while now. I was hoping to catch sight of a Wren that is often about but no luck with that one either.
Overnight rain got rid of the snow round here, just large pools of water everywhere and a forlorn looking snowman on the cricket field.
