Friday at the Flicks - Young Goldfinches + Hungry Hedgehog

Two young Goldfinches of different ages looking at the amount of red on their heads:

An evening gobbling just about every dried mealworm in sight:

Have a great weekend observing the wildlife around you.

  1. Hi John, great to see the young goldfinch. It shows what small changes in feeding can do. The last couple of summers (with more garden budget going on pond works etc) I haven’t put out sunflower hearts and haven’t seen as many finches then. I’ve missed seeing their young. However, the 3x peanut feeders have worked well. They are no longer getting wasted as Jackdaws and Magpies are enjoying them now too!

Great to see you still have hedgehog sightings. I guess when it’s usually cooler up here they may go into hibernation before yours? On the other side we are a couple of weeks behind you season wise. Mmm… we’re enjoying watching our hedgehogs visiting the feeding station just now too. Such characters they all are. Must get some footage uploaded soon :-)

    1. Hello Shirley. There have been lots of different youngsters this year. Seems to have been a good breeding season for most.

I love to see Hedgehogs visiting. I would guess most people round here don't even know they are about. I think they will take the occasional long nap on colder days before hibernation starts. Look forward to seeing what yours get up to.

  3. I guess we know now where the "hog" part of their name comes from!

    1. Wilma. That one was definitely pigging out. It's the time to build up fat reserves for the Winter hibernation.
