A Wolf in the Grass

A wolf spider that is.  In fact dozens if not scores of them. I doesn't matter where I look around the gravel or long grass around the edge of the lawn I can guarantee to see lots of these small brown spiders making for cover:

To give an idea of size, the wood is about 3/4 inch (20mm) wide.

This group of spiders are unusual in that they can tolerate others close by unlike most which are solitary. With the vast number of wolf spiders around there must be a wealth of insect life to feed them all.

    oh, yours are tiny, then! our wolf spiders can get as large as my palm leg-to-leg. :)

      TWG: Only known as Wolf Spiders as they live so close together and almost hunt in packs like wolves.
      I'll stick with my miniature ones ;)

    Thw wolf spiders I saw in large numbers the other day had long slimmis bodies with a yellow stripe down them

      SDG: There are lots of different ones which come under the general heading of Wolf Spiders. All mine are the more typical brown ones.

    They are doing well up here this year. I have never seen so many. Good shots I will have to try again.
