A Pretty Pong

I bought some Stapelia Grandiflora plants which have started to flower:

The flowers are about 50mm across and very prettily patterned:

Unfortunately there is a down side to them which I didn't find out about until later. A strong scent which has been described in many ways. None of them complimentary. It's not known as the Carrion Plant for nothing. In my case I was accusing Penny of having been caught short during the night. Fortunately for her it turned out to be the scent from the flower.

  4. wow! exotic beauty but i'll skip the aroma. :)

we have an ornamental pear tree in our yard. several springs i thought our septic system wasn't working correctly as we'd get a foul odor for about a week. almost called the company for a service call. finally discovered it was the silly tree blooms.

    1. TWG: They are only bad in a closed room. Hardly noticeable elsewhere.

  5. Gorgeous flower! Very unusual. I, too, am familiar with the flowering pear flower smell that TWG noted. It can be overpowering when there is an entire stand of trees blooming! But at least they aren't house plants ...
