A Trip to the Vet

It is three months since Bobby started the medication for his deteriorating back leg joints so he was due for re-assessment. His progress has been very varied depending how active he has been but on the whole is doing about as well as can be expected. We agreed to add in a pain killer as Bobby can get quite uncomfortable by the end of the day. Also he has an old injury to one front leg which occasionally plays up.

When I first collected him from the Ark (rescue and rest home) I had him checked over by the vet and was told he had the beginnings of a cataract in one eye. I have noticed this cloud over more over the years so I asked the vet to look at that as well. Poor old Bobby not only has a cataract but probably retinal damage as well. The pupil in that eye doesn't respond to light but does respond when light is shone in the other eye. Unfortunately there is nothing which can be done for that.

Taking the weight of My Paws
In spite of all that Bobby still manages to enjoy life, still goes bonkers when it is walkies time and keeps a good appetite.

  1. John, a terrible thing is an ageing dog. He looks happy though. Get a young dog to look after him.
Wish him all the best from Molly and I.

  2. Hello John, I am so glad the assessment went reasonably well (I had a slight panic when I first saw the post title) and hope the extra painkillers do a good job. What a lovely boy he is! The photos are gorgeous and the sheer abandonment in the second photo is a joy to see, he is obviously a very contented dog. I hope he continues to have many more happy times with you and that we will share more of his adventures.

  3. I remember going through a similar time with my old dog,Jess. She had cataracts, stiff legs and a balance problem which made her walk around as if she had been dipping into the whisky but she was happy right to the end (aged 20) which is the important thing. We are now trying to make life equally as good for our old cat who at 19 yrs old is also beginning to suffering a bit with age related problems. I hope someone looks after me just as well when I get very old:-)

  4. He may have a few ailments John, but there's no denying how contented he is.
That second picture of him in his bed had me laughing aloud. One very happy dog.

  5. Hello Adrian. Bobby say thank you. He still appears to be enjoying life to the full. Aches or no aches it doesn't stop him from hurtling around when the occasion arises.

  6. Hello Jan. I think Bobby is doing as well as can be expected. I think the problem is that the breed is so active that their joints wear out. Like most animals he never complains but just gets on with life. The ears and nose are still in full working order and he doesn't miss much of what is going on.
There is no modesty involved when Bobby finds the most comfortable sleeping position. He has to lean on something or those long lags overbalance him ;)

  7. Hello Helen. Your description reminded me of a dog which used to live in the village which had had several strokes and also looked as though it was tanked up on brandy all the time. He still enjoyed his walks and meeting people and other dogs.

  8. Hello Keith. Looking through the photos in a couple of the Flickr groups it would appear that sighthounds love to sleep upside down if they can. I love the way he has to position his legs so their weight doesn't make him roll over.

  11. Hello Roy - I think what you meant to say was 'spoilt rotten' ;)

  12. Hello Omi. Bobby has good days and poor days but he never complains. I think he will feel even better when we eventually get some warm weather.

  13. My ageing dog also goes bonkers when I mention the 'W' word! It sounds like Bobby still enjoys life to the full.

  14. Hello Matron. I am always amazed by the way animals accept whatever life throws at them and just get on with living. Bobby has never learned the 'W' word so it is safe to say it here. For some unknown reason he responds to 'get ready'.
