It took me by surprise when I checked through the video captures this morning. Having a good look at the Blue Tit nestbox was a pair of Great Tits. Fortunately for the Blue Tits the hole is probably too small for the new visitors.
No sound on this video clip.
A short while later the Blue Tit was back to continue the Spring clean started a couple of days ago.
They certainly gave that the once over John.
ReplyDeleteHello Keith. They certainly did, especially the one examining the entrance hole.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures John.. I live in West london and was wondering if female tits have generally started roosting in London generally, as for the last 5-6 days I see no interest in my boxes. I am assuming you are in london too John. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated. Ken 23/03/10
ReplyDeleteThanks for you comment Anon. No. I live in Lincolnshire and the Blue Tits are still investigating various nesting sites. They seem to spend weeks looking before they make their minds up.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see, John but as you say the entrance is probably more suited to the Blue tits. You never know though!
ReplyDeleteWe had a group of four noisy Great tits at a feeder yesterday. They were on a tree near both nestboxes but they didn’t go investigating :-(
Hello Shirl. Once again there has been a couple of days with no activity round the boxes. I put a different front on another box hoping the Great Tits might investigate that one.
ReplyDeleteHi again John, good idea with the front change. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeletehello john lovely website. I have two nestboxes both at 2 metres high and both has seen no activity for the last 6 days, though feeder in the distance is busy. Is the height of 2 metres not high enough??
ReplyDeleteHello Van. Thank you for visiting and your kind comment. According to the R.S.P.B. boxes for tits can be fixed from 2 to 5 meters above the ground. Mine is just over 2 meters up. The visits to my box are very short at the moment, only lasting a few minutes so it is possible to miss seeing them until they get busy building a nest.

hello John
ReplyDeleteI have a small back garden approx 12x12 metres I have a peanut feeder that is frequently used by green parakeets.. Tit nestbox is about 5-6 metres away from the feeder..Could the parakeets be the reason as to why the nestbox is not being used? Thanks for your help.
Congratulations John at least they are venturing in the box in pairs now. Could I ask your opinion please? My box is very close to a bush that many birds seek shelter after managing to get a peanut off the feeder..Even though my nestbox is not near a feeder, do you think the fact that it is a relatively busy spot be putting them off? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI am wondering if changing the front of a box creates new interest to birds, as i have a box that has seen no visits this season at all. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated:-)
