At a Snail's Pace

After a nice meal at the Wagon and Horses, South Reston, it was a case of an unscheduled visit to the vet. Penny is having trouble with her gums and teeth yet again. After an examination we came away with a lighter wallet and a two week supply of anti-biotic tablets. Next was to get the grass cut as rain was forecast for the evening.

First thing this morning the short wet grass seemed to be covered in slugs and snails but by the time it was light enough for photography the slugs had all found a safe hide-away. Just a few snails were left slowly making their way across the grass.

    1. TWG. I always wonder exactly what they see with eyes that wave about on stalks.

  2. Stunning John. How do you geet a YouTube video to fit their frame? I did ask a few days ago.

    1. Adrian: that one was saved as HD 720P (1280 x 720) mp4
iMovie only gives a few choices on the Macbook.
YouTube always nags that it is not one of their suggested formats but that just means it takes them a bit longer to process it.

    3. Adrian. p.s. that is also what I have the Nikon set to for video (HD 720P 30 fps) For blogging, etc. I can see no point in using 1080p (1920x1080) it just means much larger files to upload.

    4. John, I spent six hours processing a 50s video. I shot RAW so I can resize to suit You Tube. I ditched 1272 RAW files as they were only an experiment. Whatever YouTube ask for it always turns out a different size and far too soft. Guess I shouldn't complain.....it's free.

    6. Adrian. I don't use RAW for video on the Canon and the Nikon doesn't have it but it seems to work well enough.

  3. Really quite fascinating watching its tentacles surveying as it slowly progresses! Little does it know it's a focus of your lens...or maybe you are in its focus ... ;) Amazed to see Mrs. GT beak-diving to turn all of her 8 eggs.. it will be interesting to see what happens when the chicks hatch. I have enjoyed all of your posts...just haven't been commenting anywhere lately. Liked your comment about my ducks reminding you of the plastic ones on the wall...took me back!

    1. Glo - just imagine having a constantly changing view of the world if our eyes moved in different directions.

  4. Arne't they just gorgeous (in the photographs! he he!) Great captures John! I very rarely have any snails, probably due to the Olive Thrush, who loves them, but every morning I see the silvery trails the slugs leave on the patio and rocks - I really think nothings wants to eat them! Ugh!

    1. Maree - yes, always interesting to watch close up. I also have thrushes around but they are not using anywhere in my garden for an anvil this year. Hedgehogs are supposed to eat slugs and I think frogs will have a go at them.
