When I look through the previous nights video captures it is interesting to see who will be the first early morning visitor to help themselves to any food Honey has left in the dish. This morning it was a very cautious Magpie. It checks carefully to make sure no one is watching before snatching a couple of tasty morsels.
Love the way he looks around; like someone who shouldn't be there lol
ReplyDeleteIt is surprising just how many creatures eat the food that is put out John. I have a very small mesh feeder which is pushed deep into a woody old Clematis, it was intended for Dunnocks or Wrens but in the Spring I spotted a tiny mouse/vole feeding in it. I have also seen snails and slugs feeding from the bird seed in the ground feeders after dark!
ReplyDeleteIncidentally I see a lot of us, myself included, have no followers showing at the moment! This happened earlier in the year too.
Yes Keith. They always look like guilty sneak thieves here.
ReplyDeleteHi Jan. I have been surprised a cat hasn't sampled one of the items in the hog dish as it looks like dry cat food. Slugs seem to stay away from the paved area which is unusual as they are all over the concrete paths on damp nights.
ReplyDeleteI have had a Dunnock visiting each morning recently. It spends most of its time under things near the feeders so I have put out some food for it for tomorrow.
I had read elsewhere that some 'followers' lists had gone AWOL. Mine seems to be working at the moment. Shouldn't have said that as it has just vanished. Strange - but then Blogger seems to throw a tantrum from time to time.
I had a search on the Blogger 'Known Issues' list and last time it was a problem with the Friends Connect site slowing down so it may be a similar problem this time. No doubt it will be sorted in time.
Is it OK to put food out again for the birds? I've not done so as I'm worried because of that illness that's going around the bird populations.
ReplyDeleteLoved watching the vid!
I'm not sure exactly what you mean Yolanda. Have you had a special problem in the Netherlands. If so do you have a wild bird society with a web site which may give you information? I have kept feeding mine all the time. I was a bit worried when there was a bird flu scare some time ago but that seems to have quietened down. I always thoroughly wash my hands after handling anything the birds use.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting watching your magpies - which are quite different from magpies out here. Must get some photos of ours asap. I've been catching up on some reading and I really like your late flowers. Keep blogging! I enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mick. It's nice to know people enjoy reading my waffle.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see the differences with the Magpies - once the dust has settled.
Catchy title on your video, John ;) Quite a bright and perky magpie for early morning, and I think he may now become a regular since he has successfully scouted out the area! Easy pickings, for sure :)
ReplyDeleteHello Glo. I am pretty sure the Magpie is one of the three which were visiting daily in the Summer. Occasionally I still see all three together.
