Spring 2013

Spring 2013

Looking at some information on the BBC website it shows that the temperature in this area for the same date in 2012 was +16C. Yesterday the temperature reached +2C with a wind chill of -4C in a blustery cold wind. At the time of writing this morning it is -0.5C

The Hedgehog arrived soon after 8 p.m. last night and scoffed nearly all the crushed peanuts I had put out. I hope it managed to find a warm nest site as it was snowing by 9 p.m..

  1. A bit of a shock to the system wading through knee deep snow and trying to stand in the wind.

  2. This sounds a bit perverse, but I really like that photo John! It is a bit unseasonal, but you have to remember that last year was unseasonally hot, back in 2008 it snowed at Easter and I remember it snowing in April and May before, it's just so cold at the moment, that's the big difference.

    1. I also liked the view of the yellow flowers covered in snow John. I remember coming back on the Isle of Mann ferry one Easter years ago when it was blowing a blizzard. As you say it is the bitter cold wind which makes it worse.

  3. Must be one of the worst springs in years John.

    1. They keep saying it may end up as the coldest Easter period for 50 years Keith.

  5. Lovely picture of the snow... it's crazy at the moment as we've had quite a spring like day - working outside in a longsleeved T-shirt for a change! Do hope things warm up for you and your hedgehog... I'm hoping we might have hedgehogs again here this year but I've found a few dead ones over the past few years as the French farmers still insist in using pesticides which I'm convinced has something to do with it... probably poisons the things they eat which is such a shame. I live in hope!

  6. I too like the photo John....but not the weather. Last year on the 23rd we sat by the river in Stratford-upon-Avon eating ice creams in very warm sunshine! Mind you, I remember heavy snow on April 20th some years ago!

I've just caught up with your recents posts and videos. Poor Hedgehog being awake in this weather, thank goodness it has you to help it out. Did you put some meat in the house in the end? I should think that would be a great help along with the peanuts.

Lovely to see the LTT on the earlier post too. Such lovely little birds, I haven't seen them in my garden for a while. As for the Rook... they're very persistent... and very entertaining to watch ;-) Great videos John!

  7. Yep… same pictures here, John, although the daffodils haven’t even been able to open yet! It is the strong winds causing drifting snow across roads that I don’t like just now.

However, I did like those impressive Rooks at your new Bistro! The LTT’s are a favourite of mine too but interestingly enough I haven’t spotted them at our feeders during our two weeks of snow and cold temps.

I’m delighted I haven’t seen any hedgehogs here. I’m keeping my feeding station cam on in the evenings and I don’t want to see anything other than a mouse in there at night. I doubt hedgehogs would find enough food up here. What fun to see yours again, good job you spotted them out and have food out for them again.

Yes, the birds and wildlife do need a helping hand just now. We’ve been enjoying Yellowhammers the last two weeks and a Pied Wagtail made its presence known in the garden over the weekend. A great garden watching weekend :-)
