Incubation Started?

Not sure whether another egg was laid last night. It would appear that Mrs Great Tit has finished laying and has now started incubating her eggs.

Update - it looks as though there are 8 eggs and Mrs GT is still leaving the nest from time to time. If they all hatch (2 out of 7 didn't last year) it is going to be a very busy time feeding all those hungry youngsters.

  1. I can hardly wait for the next couple of weeks. I thought they laid more eggs than eight.

    1. Adrian: According to BTO there can be 5 to 12 so 8 looks a good average.

  2. John, when I was at junior school we used to have a nature table and were encouraged to bring in eggs and anything else we could steal from defenceless and not so defenceless birds and animals. The wimps brought flora. We used to get little gold stars to stick in our nature book. I got a Tawny Owls egg and a nasty scar on my head for my trouble....can remember thinking it was worth at least two stars.

How times have changed! No more old glass battery cases* with a bit of water and a few rocks for newts, frogs and toads. All the amphibians sitting there in class absorbing the wisdom of the time. They probably learn't more than we did.

    * Bakewell had a major employer that made lead acid batteries for submarines. They built them in massive glass boxes. Ideal fish tanks they made.

  3. Adrian: Ah yes, when teaching I always had a nature table - no telling what would turn up ready to go walkabout round the classroom.

Can remember as a 5yr old being sent to the local cycle shop with a spent accumulator to exchange so as to keep the wireless working.
