Goodbye to Windozy?

For a long time I have considered moving away from Microsoft.  Last week I finally got Round Tuit and ordered a MacBook Pro which duly arrived today. This then is my first attempt at doing everything on it:

The retina screen is so crisp it should save my eyes some ache!  No doubt it will be a while before I can abandon the PC completely. There are a lot of files to transfer and some new programs / apps to find.

    1. TWG: Putting out the occasional apple at this time of year helps to keep the Blackbirds in one place long enough to photo them!

  2. Ah, glad you have joined the ranks of the more discerning computer users John.{:))
You will find that 'iPhoto' is OK as imaging software, but you may want to invest in 'Aperture' which is better.

    1. Roy: Thanks for the 'welcome'. I found a freebie, Fotor, which seems a good improvement over iPhoto. Finding something less clunky than iMovie is taking a little longer.

  3. I love my MacBook Air, John, and I am a former dyed in the wool PC/Microsoft defender. A new system always seems to take an extraordinary amount of time, money, and effort, but it was worth it to me. Hope you enjoy the process of getting up to speed on your new computer and OS. ;-)

    1. Wilma: As I find my way round the MacBook I like it more and more. I have used Windows since v3.1 so it is quite a break to change systems :)

    1. Adrian. It will be a long job to find programs to do the sort of things I am used to.

  5. Oh John, how you're going to enjoy using a MAC! I work on a MAC desktop and had it partitioned with Windows for years, using the Windows side. Then I had a TOTAL Windows crash, didn't partition again and started using the MAC side about 3 years ago. For the longest time ever I was longing for my Windows, because MAC is quite different, but now I can't even give advice to anybody regarding Internet Explorer or ANY Windows applications and there's (almost) nothing I cannot do on my MAC. Congratulations with your choice, you won't be sorry and it looks like you've mastered it already! But I don't like laptops, I prefer desktop and second choice tablet, another GREATEST innovation of the Century!

    1. Maree: The full size Macs were more than I was prepared to pay! The retina screen on the MacBook is so crisp I can read very small print with ease and the gesture facilities on the touch pad make it easy to use, once I have learned how many fingers do each thing. I like my iPad but for me the screen s too small for blogging and photo / video editing.

  6. John, I suspect I made a mistake last year when I had the laptop built. I have no problems with it but I do love the monitor at 23" and two screens. Macs must be the Rolls Royce of computers. I just have trouble believing it. I paid a total of £13K I suspect I could have put another grand on top for a Mac.
I notice that Mac users often have them running on cooling pads.
Mine is fine, The fans do run but only briefly usually whilst baking and rendering 3D.

We all know Windozzze faults but it would be good to hear the upside and downside of a Mac from someone that gives them a hard time.

    1. PS 13 should read 1.3. I'm not GCHQ.

    2. Adrian: Swings and roundabouts I think. I bought the lead for connecting the MacBook to the digital input of my monitor but so far haven't connected it as the laptop screen is so crisp. While I get used to it OSX Maverick seems clunky for some operations but it's mainly getting used to different was of presenting icons on screen. Fortunately there's plenty of good help around the net. So far the hardest to get used to is the Mac equivalent of a file explorer. I will probably look out for a third party replacement.

  7. don't know if you have time to download this free film editor as it expires today, but perhaps if you hurry ~ might be a good video editor for the mac

    1. Lots of hugs Glo ;) I was up early enough. Downloaded and installed. I had looked at it previously and decided it was too expensive to experiment with!

    2. Thanks for the hugs :) I am so pleased you were successful in downloading and installing the film editor. Talk about timing!!

I have watched a youtube introduction which was a good start. I'm sure you'll enjoy your MacBook Pro ~ and have lots of interesting and enjoyable times with it....

    3. Haven't had a chance to try it for real yet Glo. Another steep learning curve I would expect. Keeps me off the streets and out of mischief ;)
