I happened to spot this video capture this morning. I was curious as to what it was doing.
In the past I have seen them bury the occasional peanut in the lawn. This is first time I have been able to work out how and why some food suddenly goes missing from the bird table.
Goodness, that is a pretty bird! I wonder how it remembers where it left the treat!?!
ReplyDeleteEllen: Possible in this case as Magpies often land near the Hedgehog House. With the peanuts I have seen them bury in the I wouldn't expect them to find those again.
DeleteThat is a great video and great observation :)
ReplyDeleteRR: Thank you. It is nice to get the occasional glimpse of animal / bird behaviour.
DeleteNice bit of food caching these. All corvids do this and they'll forget where many have been left. A small piece of information, jays forget where many of their acorns have been cashed - they then germinate in the spring and that is how oak woodland moves uphill. Nature is brilliant.
ReplyDeleteWessex Reiver: I have seen video clips of Crows stashing food. Thank you for the information about Jays and Acorns. Not something I had heard about before now. The only other bird I have seen stash food was aCoal Tit. A few years ago I noticed one visiting the bird table several times in a short period of time. Each time taking a black Sunflower seed. Eventually I saw it was hiding them in the bark of a nearby tree.
