All's Well That Ends Well

First a very big thank you for all the messages of support over the past day or so. They have helped a lot on keeping me going.

When I checked my YouTube account at 7.30 this morning the old video thumbnails were still missing but another look a few minutes ago showed that they had been restored. It must have been the length of time their 'improvements' and recent upgrade has taken to catch up with everything. It would have helped things if their system hadn't sent messages that accounts had been permanently disabled which was a bit of a shock to my system to say the least. One saying it was temporarily unavailable would have been better wording.

Just a couple of piccies today. Normally I dead head all of my flowers. For some reason this year I missed the Flag Irises which went on to produce a profusion of seed pods. As the stems collapsed under the weight of seeds many were partly eaten by slugs like the first picture but the seeds were untouched and look as though they are ripening anyway. The uneaten ones are just beginning to split open normally. What a lovely brilliant orange the seeds are.

Many thanks to Chris Rose who pointed out - Your photo is of the seed pod of the Stinking or Beefsteak Iris (so called because its crushed leaves are meant to have that sort of smell ...) which is Iris foetidissima. It is nice when visitors take the time to let me know when I have misidentified something - which can happen frequently.

  1. How nice that all your videos are back. I'm sure its a relief. The photos of the seeds and pods look really like autumn - beautiful color!

  2. We are delighted to see that everything is back to normal again for you - the vivid orange of the seeds contrasts so well with the very light pale green colour of the seed pods. On a separate note, all that happened yesterday with your account gave us a very big shock with the reality that it could all be happily online one minute and the next, pulled completely. Quite scary really. You must be very relieved and we are really happy and delighted for you that all is OK again.

  3. I am very relieved, Mick. The iris seeds are such a bright, almost fluorescent colour.

  4. Events like that, Twosie, are the reason I store all my photos and videos on two separate hard drives. Hard drive space is so relatively cheap these day it is worth having an external one just for backing up files. Not like my first hard drive, for the old Atari ST, which was over £500 for 48MB.

The update on the YouTube system looks as though it could take two weeks to move all the videos so the same thing may happen to others but knowing now that it will only disrupt things for a little over 24hrs is somewhat reassuring.

  5. Good Evening John, gosh... I seemed to have missed all of this! Delighted to hear your videos and thumbnails have been restored... just logged in to check on mine now! All seems fine thanks goodness :-D

I am so sorry this has driven you to reconsidering continuing with this blog. On the other side I am absolutely thrilled for you that all is well once again!

You have put so much time into your video collection and your posts it would be such a shame if you were to call it a day. We would all miss your daily updates :-D

Just wondering... any activity in your hedgehog house? I am taking a guess that the hog that had visited ours is no longer doing so... mealworms have been untouched for several days :-(

Do hope it is happy elsewhere and not been a stat. of hedgehog road kill.

Great seed pod pic BTW. Wishing you a great weekend :-D

  6. Hi Shirl. Thank you for your kind comments. You were as well off missing it :) It hit me hard to start with but I would really miss the comradeship of the community too much. All being well there will be a new 'Friday at the Flicks' tomorrow. This entry seems to be missing from peoples lists, not for the first time, so I hope tomorrows appears properly.

The only activity in Hoggy Lodge was a minibeast of some sort crawling round the camera last night. Got me all excited for a few seconds. Honey has been visiting later and for shorter periods these past few nights. I think she may already have a nest elsewhere. I have the same worries as you over Henry who I haven't seen for weeks. We do get attached to our little visitors. Hope yours turns up again soon.

Looking forward to seeing the progress on your new wildlife pond project. Congratulations again on your award. You have a reputation to maintain now :)

  7. As a bit of an Iris buff I'd just observe that there are two species native to the UK, and the term 'Flag Iris' is used for Iris pseudacorus which has brown, corky seeds that float in its usually watery habitat. Your photo is of the seed pod of the Stinking or Beefsteak Iris (so called because its crushed leaves are meant to have that sort of smell ...) which is Iris foetidissima. A good plant to grow in the garden, will tolerate dry shade and would be much better if not prone to disfigurement by leaf-miners.

  8. John I'm glad to hear all has ended well with your videos and thumbnails...I seems to have missed your problems due to my living in my bed sick and basically post and run on my blog. I'm very happy that you didn't loose anything and that your account is still intact.

  9. I agree John back up and back up. Online storage has a convenience attraction but hard drives are so cheap. Just as well with the rubbish I save.

  10. Good to hear it is finally sorted John, but like you say, that e-mail they sent could have been worded better.
What a lovely colour those seeds are. I wonder if the birds will enjoy them?

  11. Thank you for visiting Chris Rose and for the information about Irises and the correct identification. Now put right in the main text.

  12. Thanks Crista. Oh dear. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. Get well soon.

  13. Hi Adrian. Yes indeed. I have had a couple of hard drives fail in the past. It is all very well having one replaced under warranty but that doesn't replace any lost material so it's definitely belt and braces here.

  14. Hi Keith. I keep wondering if anything will be tempted to eat the seeds. The exposed ones have been in view for ages and seem untouched so far.

  15. Hi John

Re your "Friday at the Flicks" comment. We just looked at your blog and saw the new post for today. Since we have a PC each, we both viewed it, and saw different versions, as if you were in the middle of updating it. When I did a refresh it has now disappeared completely and this post is top of the list. I wonder if Blogspot doesn't like duplicate titles? When I was doing a backup of the on-line version of my blog (following your problems) I saw that each post was saved with a filename based on the post title, so duplicates may cause problems.

  16. Hi Twosie. I deleted the first version and have only just finished the new version as I had to wait quite a while for the files to upload to YouTube. Hopefully the new version will show Ok now.

  17. So glad all ended well John, I am terrified of losing my photos and have them backed up in several places but it still worries me.

Those lovely seeds look like oranges or tomatoes!

Thank you for visiting. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. Any comment, or correction to any information or identification I get wrong, is most welcome. John
