Red Eyed Fly

Spotted this resting on a solar lantern in the garden today.

Red Eyed Fly

It appears to be either Eustalomyia or Anthomyia but which group and which particular member of the group has eluded me as there are so many with red eyes and black and white markings.

  1. John, I remember a few weeks ago I read of a service run by the Natural History Museum in London whereby you could email photos of insects and they would identify them for you. Perhaps worth looking into if you are interested.

  2. It's just amazing to see such details of a relatively small winged insect! Even its feet are visible. Fascinating eyes! That's a terrific shot, John!

  3. Thank you for that Matron. If all else fails I will look into it.

  4. Thank you Glo. It was a fairly small crop from the full photo but given the right lighting level the Panasonic TZ7 does a really good job. Also it helped as the fly stayed put even when the lens was within 3 inches of it. The combination of red eyes and chess board pattern really make it stand out in a crowd.

Thank you for visiting. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. Any comment, or correction to any information or identification I get wrong, is most welcome. John
