The Soggy Magpie

A couple of days ago, when the rain was very heavy, I spotted a juvenile Magpie on the peanut feeder. I don't remember seeing one on any of the feeders before. They usually scavenge on the ground picking up the seeds dropped by the smaller birds.

Unfortunately the lighting conditions were abysmal and very difficult for obtaining any crisp shots. For a while it stood on the edge of the bird bath for, every so often having a good shake to dry off its feathers.

I tried to take some video but the camcorder insisted on focussing on the raindrops running down the kitchen window.

  1. You did well with these. They are a very wary bird.

  2. Normally they are Adrian. This one was so wet and hungry it wasn't taking a lot of notice of me and I stayed as far from the window as I could get so as not to spook it.

  3. Great photos!! I really love Magpie's and enjoy watching them. When we lived in Alaska we saw them quite often, but they don't live here in Virginia, so I have to admire photos from those like you who have and enjoy them! :-)

  4. A soggy bird indeed! They must have been tired and hungry, but clever enough to adapt their habits.

  5. Thank you, Kim, for visiting and leaving a comment. As they are very wary I usually hear more than see Magpies around here.

  6. Yes Matron, its neck feathers were so wet it looked almost bald in that area. I think it was very hungry the way it had its full attention on eating as they usually disappear on noticing the slightest movement.
