Wings for Wednesday

There are two plants in the front garden which are attracting plenty of winged creatures at the moment. Lavender and Hibiscus.

Bees:

Hoverflies:

Flies:

Wasps:

Notice anything missing? Butterflies! Last year the lavender especially was a great attraction for butterflies. To date this year I haven't seen one on or near these plants.

All photographs were taken with the Lumix TZ7, usually with the lens within three inches of the insect. Not a problem with the bees and hoverflies but can be a bit fraught when it comes to wasps.

  1. Wonderful macro. Not much chance of anything here today...........blowing a gale and raining.

  4. Amazing detail John! The markings are fascinating, as well as the wing intricacies.

You're brave to get that near to the wasp ... I won't mention the huge nest I have on the side of my house, my interference with the pressure washer, and the attack on my eyelid!

I haven't seen many butterflies this year either, just the occasional white one and the usual tiger swallowtail.

  5. Absolutely stunning shots, John - such crispness ! Like Glo, we have not seen many butterflies here either, except for a few cabbage white ones.

  8. Oh dear, Glo. Wasps can be a real danger. I have a nest under the front hedge. I usually have the local council attend to nests but they charge more and more each year.
