A Song for Saturday - Mistle Thrush

As we exited the front door yesterday afternoon I could hear a Mistle Thrush singing fairly close by. As we walked up the lane it got louder. It took a while to spot the bird sat on a thin branch at the top of a tall tree. Normally the thrushes disappear before I see them. This time I was in luck as I had remembered to take the Lumix with me so I tried to get some video of it singing. I didn't dare to get too close but managed to get a few seconds of its song before other dog walkers coming from the opposite direction scared it away. Not the best by a long way but only the second time I have managed a piece of video of the Mistle Thrush.

  2. They are very vocal John and Mistle Thrushes singing at the top of trees is a sure sign that Spring is on the way.

  3. Lovely song John, I would immediately have recognised it as a Thrush singing, they sound very similar to our Olive Thrushes here in South Africa...

  5. They are Roy. I could just hear one this afternoon. It must have been getting on for 1/4 mile away. There was just the faintest bit of daylight first thing this morning when the Blackbirds started singing. Roll on Spring.

  7. Thank you Maree. The song is very different from a Song Thrush. One day I'll try to get video of both singing.

  8. That was a treat, John. I don't know why but I never seem to see Mistle Thrushes :-( although listening to yours I think I may have heard them but not known what they were.

The song of the Song Thrush is my very favourite birdsong.

So glad you too put a complaint on Blogger about the word verification, I spotted it earlier. I took word verification off my blog the moment I spotted they had changed it!

  9. I often hear them Jan, but very rarely see them. I was lucky the tree was bare or I would never have spotted that one. Yes, the Song Thrush has more variation - a 'proper' song.

The new verification is a real pain in the posterior. I took mine off quite a while ago when I got fed up with having to fill it in on other blogs.
