Lots of Young Birds About

I've seen a lot of young House Sparrows over the past week or so. Also a flock of Starlings descended on the feeders and whatever else they thought would provide a free meal. Wherever one or two go they are soon joined by most of the flock.

Yesterday I spotted a brief visit by what looked to be a young Robin. This morning there were three in the garden. Difficult to photograph as they were nearly always on the move but I did manage a couple of photos.

Still getting used to a routine without dog walks. I did dog sit one day for my next door neighbour. Nice to have company but it reminded me how active younger dogs are. I found it quite exhausting after nine years of living with a 40mph couch potato. I can't see me having a new companion.

  1. The other day after my son mowed the grass, our yard was filled with lots of robins. I think the mowing must shake up the bugs in the grass and the birds come to feed. I was surprised at how many there were.
Maybe you could hire yourself out as a dog walker for working neighbors!

  2. Offer to do lunch time dog walks. It seems a shame dogs are often left all day. I've noticed second brood fledglings. Have you ever seen a juvenile wood pigeon? I haven't and here we can't shoot them fast enough to keep the numbers down. The Sparrow hawks have been helping but neither of us seem to make much of a dent in their numbers.

  3. Seeing a lot of young house sparrows in the garden here too but no starlings. my daughter is signed up for a scheme called Walk My Doggy (or something like that) not sure if it is nationwide but I know she gets emails with details of local dogs that need being taken for a walk for various reasons. Not sure if that is the sort of thing that would appeal to you as obviously it is not a companion at home for you but just thought I would mention it.

  4. Thanks for the suggestions folks. Much appreciated. Unfortunately one reason I haven't seriously considered finding a new companion is one hip joint often starts giving me grief even half way round the block.

    1. Roy. Very true. When Penny took the place of Bobby she took some getting used to and I was fitter and more active then!
