Little and Large

There have been quite a few bees buzzing round various open flowers plus the occasional bumble bee, often resting in the Sunshine to warm up their wing muscles. The juxtaposition of these two caught my attention:



I think the little mini-beast may be a vine weevil.

When the weather is nice enough for sitting in the garden you never know what will stop by.



This little weevil decided to see whether there was any tea left in the mug

A cool start to the day yesterday but once the Sun got going the temperature climbed steadily almost reaching 21C for several hours.  When I went out to clear a cobweb from in front of one of my cameras I spotted this little weevil sunning itself on top of the warm rain cover.



Managed to get some pruning and weeding done so the green wheelie bin is suitably full for Friday morning's green waste collection.

Nearly More Than I Bargained For

Walking past some juicy looking brambles I picked one to sample.
Just as I was about to pop it in my mouth I spotted something moving

 

After quite a bit of searching I found out this is a Sitona lineatus
also known as a Pea Leaf Weevil
A common pest of beans, peas and similar plants.

The darned thing would not stay still.
Even though I took several shots I was lucky to get just the one in focus.

I did manage to eat the bramble.
Soft, juicy and tasty with no crunchy bits.

Whenever I fold back the hasps while unlocking the garage or shed doors I never know what will be hiding there. Sometimes a moth, sometimes a spider. This time it was a weevil:



By the time I had fetched the 50D with its macro lens I only managed three focus stacked photos before it made a dash for cover.

I was about to move a planter I have hanging on the fence when I spotted what at first I thought was a dollup of bird dung but on closer examination turned out to be alive:

 

It was such a strange looking creature the like of which I had not seen before.
I just had to take several photos from different angles to give me a chance of identifying it:













Next job was to find an identification. I ended up on the Naturespot web site and after scrolling through dozens of bug photos eventually found a perfect match.
Size: about 10mm. Common name: Cramp-ball Fungus Weevil.

This weevil is not as scarce as its name would suggest.
