Some You Capture, Some You Don't .....

.... photographs that is.

I suspect this photo of a Peacock butterfly taken about a week ago will be the last flutter I will capture this year now night temperatures are regularly down to single figures.

On our mid morning walkabout I had an Alice in Wonderland experience. I had decided that, despite the low temperature, as the Sun was out and the sky blue we would take the extra detour through the back of the village churchyard. Just as we arrived near the back of the church I spotted something brilliant white bounding through the unkempt older section of the graveyard. By its general shape and the way it moved I could swear it was a white rabbit. As is usual with many sightings like this it was in view such a short while. Penny hadn't noticed it at all.

As we ambled past the church building there was something we both saw and watched. A female Muntjac deer was slowly walking across the far side of the newer graveyard section. I suspect that was the first one Penny had ever seen. She just stood still, her gaze following its every move. Unfortunately as soon as I decided to get the little Nikon out from under two warm layers of clothing it had vanished from view.

With the colder mornings and freshly filled bird feeders more varieties are visiting the garden. A couple of Starlings have discovered the fat balls. How long before they invite the rest I wonder. A Great Tit is once again a regular along with dozens of House Sparrows. I noticed a Coal Tit making frequent visits to grab Sunflower hearts to take and hide in various parts of the garden.

Finally a couple of hurried shots of a Wren:

Time to put up a couple more feeders and see what we can attract.

Raiding the Raid

For some years I have had a NAS (network attached storage) unit made by Synology.
In essence it consists of a box with two 3TB hard drives and some software.

Synology NAS DSCN9078

The two hard drives can be used in series to give 6TB of storage space or connected to work in parallel as a raid. Any files sent to it are stored on the first drive. Its internal software then makes an exact copy on the second drive. What use is this method of operation? Well, if one hard drive fails there is still a complete record of the files sent to it. Replace the faulty drive and its software sets about copying everything from the good drive to the new one so we are back to two copies of everything.

I use it to store my photos, videos and music files. As I had run out of new ideas for my weekly WidsMob Montage puzzle photos I was able to search through the NAS and pick out some old photos to use over the next few weeks. I raided my raid!

The Synology is connected to my wired LAN (local area network).
File transfer speeds can top 400Mb/s on long video files.

Monday Montage

Last week's WidsMob Montage modified photo was

Montage 44

which Adrian, The Weaver of Grass, Wilma and Ragged Robin all worked out was

one of Penny's cuddly toys. (A legless dog resting on a Union Flag cushion)
A side on view

A firm favourite of hers as this one is easy to make squeak.

This week's montage is

Montage 45

a photo of what?

If you would like to have a guess please leave it in the comments.
They will be revealed, along with the original photo, next Monday.

Winter Pays a Brief Visit + Rainbow

Yesterday morning came as a bit of a shock. When we went walkabout the temperature had dropped to 1.9C but felt colder in the chill of a Northerly breeze and light rain. By early afternoon things looked even colder when a short sharp hail shower arrived. Though this turned to rain some of the hail was still visible over an hour later.

More cheerful this morning.
Sun breaking though and a very clear rainbow to greet me.

Trying to Keep Warm

A few days ago I spotted this large Bumblebee as it slowly crept across the green man by my front gate. It looked as though it was trying to find a warm place in the Autumn Sunshine.

I don't think I will see many today having had to dig out my thickest Winter coat for our early morning walkabout in temperatures which had dipped below 2C.
