Hedgehog Awareness Week

It wasn't until I had a look at Twosie the Hedgehog blog that I found out that this week is Hedgehog Awareness Week. There you will find a link to an article on the Daily Mail website.

Last night I was very confused. Just how many different Hedgehogs are there visiting my garden this year? Last night there were two young hogs, one of which should be Hoggy. The previous night there was a fully grown hog and then there is the one with one eye. So it would appear there are at lest four.

This is when the two youngsters met for a couple of times:

Though the Hedgehog House shows signs of moved bedding since Hoggy left about 8.30 last night I can't see any signs of occupation this morning. The young ones spent a lot of time eating last night so it looks as though I will have to put out more dried mealworms, crushed unsalted peanuts and sunflower hearts to cater for the rush! Just out of sight of the camera is a bowl of fresh water - always water, never milk. Though they will drink milk their digestive system cannot cope with it and it could end up killing them.

Lots of workmen here soon so I had better go and get on with what I am supposed to be doing.

  1. There was you thinking on Sunday that the hedgehog might have disappeared and now it looks like there are four, how wonderful. Happy Hedgehog week. Linda

  2. Lovely piece of video again, John and I congratulate you for emphasising the need for water and not milk and also unsalted peanuts.

Have you had any problems with blogger or Google in general lately? I have had difficulties, intermittently every evening for over a week now where nothing loads properly, if at all. It was so frustrating last night and took ages to be able to publish my latest post, the last straw was when some of the photos I was going to show suddenly disappeared and I had to put them on again! Our service provider (TalkTalk) says they know of no problems, it happens with any browser I try and I would love to hear it is Google and not me! Sorry to bother you with this but just wondered if you had noticed anything.

  3. ...glad more little hedgehogs have shown up. I love the way they lumber around. They never seem to be in a hurry. I'd love to see this animal in person some day.

  5. Hi John, we are really delighted that you are now seeing so many hedgies :)

We have put extra bedding into the entrances of a few of our nestboxes as we saw that they were dragging in the existing straw into the nest. We suppose it is down to the cold spell. It may explain why they are so hungry as well.

  6. Hello Linda. The young pair seem to have adopted my garden as they appear early every night now.

  7. Hello Jan. Thanks. Sorry to hear you have been having problems. Things seem to be OK with Blogger here but some of Google is a pain. Gmail can be very slow, have seen others complain about that. YouTube is also very hit and miss for uploading. Maybe your local network or ISP was having problems. I hope it was temporary and has cured itself now. One thing I do every now and then if contact with the internet gets a bit haphazard is to unplug and re-plug all the cable connections between the computer and the main phone outlet. That often helps a bit.

  8. Hello Kelly. The Hedgehogs always look so sweet, especially the younger ones.

  9. Hello Keith. Thanks. I think I got the green a bit too luminous but was pleased with the sky.

  10. Hello Twosie. The young hedgehogs seem ravenous. I suppose they have less fat reserves than the older hogs and they are certainly making sure they build up their weight after the Winter sleep.

  12. Hello Shirl. Yes it does seem to have become quite hectic sometimes on the Hedgehog front. At least you know you have hogs around even if they are being coy.
