Callistemon Seed Pods

Haven't been on here much recently. Firstly the Hospital has been catching up on Consultant outpatient appointments so I had three visits in ten days. They seem satisfied with my progress and the next appointment should be in about four months time. Secondly I've been making amateur radio contacts around the world on the HF bands as conditions seem to be excellent. So good my low power, simple set up managed to make contact with four Japanese radio hams this morning. Not something I can usually manage.

My Callistemon (bottle brush plant) produced another good display of its unusual red flowers. In the Summer they looked like this:

Once the flowers have faded the seed pods can be seen:

I thought this would make an interesting subject for a focus stacked closer view:

That was a stack of 20 photos taken using my home built automated unit. The following photo was taken some time ago:

Once the photos had been transferred to the laptop they were processed with Helicon Focus which used the sharp, in focus, parts of each photo and combined those bits to buid the final macro photo.

  1. Very nice stacking. I never really mastered it.
Does HF work best when you are in roughly the same time zone? I used to dread the SW exams. Good radio operators could usually get the job sorted any time even at dawn and dusk. Do you still have quiet times at 0 to 3 minutes after the hour and half hour.

    1. Adrian: Thank you.
I am using the 30m and 15m bands. So much seems to depend on the position of the Sun. From my recent observations on these bands, when the grey zone (dawn / dusk) is near me or near the far distant station or half way between seems to give me the best chance of making a contact. Don't know about the 0-3 min thing but I do know conditions can and do change very rapidly.

    2. On SW it was kept quiet for distress messages. They used to try and trick us into transmitting during the silence periods.
What with that and using Morse, it did my head in. I really hated the radio. Funny enough I took to the old north up radar and plotting sheets like a duck to water and the astro stuff I enjoyed. We did have proper radio operators in those days, they went to a place in the Lake District to be learned. Looking back I suspect our tests were just to annoy mere mortals.

  2. Well, I must admit, John, that I do not understand a word of your explanation but I do love seeing your photos! Such an unusual flower and the seed pods are so interesting! Thanks!
