I went out to catch a couple of pill bugs / woodlice. I managed that but also captured this insect at the same time. I am 99% sure I have the identification correct by the colouring, markings and especially the U shaped marking at the rear end. Size - about 4mm long. I think it is a springtail. It certainly proved it could jump a couple of times. I am pleased with this video as I managed to film it without the lid on the container so nothing to distort the result.
Also I put the clips together using Wondershare Filmora 9. It produced a proper 1080HD result unlike iMovie which seemed to give 720 in spite of the original video resolution. Fancier titles as well!
I love the way the markings on the back of its head look like a face.
What kept it busy while I videoed? I had put a drop of Golden Syrup to interest a couple of ants earlier on. (Thanks for the hint Adrian). I had wiped most of it off but the insect found a thin smear on the bottom of the dish.

Springtail
Throughout the Summer Penny has a water dish outside as well as the one in the kitchen. This morning when I brought it in to top up with fresh water I saw this small bug scurrying about in the bottom of the empty dish.

Being so small, less than 10mm long, and constantly moving around a shiny stainless steel bowl it was not easy to take a good macro shot.
A close crop:

Not only did it scurry about but also leapt across the dish which made it easier to identify as a springtail. Next to it is another very tiny, unidentified, bug.
My trusty pocket Nikon is reaching its 10,000th photograph and starting to become unreliable. It often indicates it is in focus but the 'shutter' doesn't fire. Looks as though it is time to start looking at some reviews before finding a replacement.

Springtail
Plenty of little bugs keep going for a swim in Penny's outside water dish. Mainly Pollen Beetles at the moment but spotted this one in the empty dish: (Length about 3mm)

Quite a little devil to get really close for a macro shot as it kept leaping all over the place but I did manage to get five shots to focus stack for the above picture though I had to make some manual corrections where it had moved its antennae between shots. I'm pretty sure it is a springtail.
BTW This photo uses the latest incarnation of Flickr's added information. Now it seems to show briefly on loading and then can only be seen as you hover over the picture. So far I don't object to that and clicking on the photo still takes you to a larger view on the Flickr site. I am pleased to see that their people have taken notice of the real dislike penned on the forum regarding the first attempt.
