Blue Tit Investigates Nest Box

I was really thrilled this morning to spot that a Blue Tit made two visits to the nest box. The first time it took some of the old grass stems out of the box but I was too slow starting the recorder. I was ready after that and managed to record the second, brief, visit. It was so brief I slowed down the recording a bit.

This is a photograph of the nest box taken last year.

  1. Nice piece of video John and good news that some interest is being shown.

Hope the weather is not too bad where you are. We have had very heavy snow here.

  2. I won't get my hopes up Jan as they abandoned the box last spring but it is a good start.

2 to 3 inches of snow overnight which at least made walking easier than on ice.

  3. Hi John

Happy New Year to you. It's great to see the interest in your nestbox. We too have seen a little interest. They're only viewing them from the outside at the moment but we keep hoping.... The strands of ivy around the box are a very good idea as well. We think we need to do something similar here.

  4. Hello Twosie. Happy New year to you both.

Last Winter it was used as a roost a couple of times in really cold weather but not so far this Winter so is was great to see one showing interest and doing a bit of housekeeping.

I found some cheap artificial Ivy on eBay and it has stood up to being out in all weathers well. I though it might make it look a bit more natural for the birds as the box in on the back of my shed.

Let's hope your investigators go inside the box soon.

  5. The nest box looks so lovely and cosy in this snowy, cold weather. I too missed a photograph opportunity today when I came accross a little mouse munching away on the seed left on my new bird table.

  6. Hi John,

Great video, it's great to see birds visiting your nest box again. I really hope the birds in our garden start to show some interest in our box. Maybe this cold weather is keeping the birds in "winter mode"?!

Good luck with your camera nestbox, and I look forward to seeing more videos.

  7. Hello Helen. That nest box is well built with thick wood so it should at least be draught free. It is always the way - something out of the ordinary and the camera isn't within reach. A few days ago I missed the sight of at least ten magpies in a bare tree. I have never seen so many together.

  8. Hello Joe. The visit took me completely by surprise as I expected night roosting if anything at this time of year. I hope you get some interest in your box soon.

  9. How fascinating to watch the bird investigate the inside of your nest box. It's not often we get to see bird life from that angle.

  10. Hello Glo. I am fascinated by the way the birds investigate every corner of the box. They are very fussy tenants even when it is rent free.

Thank you for visiting. Hope you enjoyed the pictures. Any comment, or correction to any information or identification I get wrong, is most welcome. John
