After missing for a couple of days there has been renewed interest in the Blue Tit nest box. Today there were four visits in just over an hour.
No idea whether it is the same bird or two or more giving it the once over.
Sound is from my usual outdoor microphone at the opposite end of the shed. Amongst others are a Collared Dove's monotonous call and the usual tut tutting of the Blackbirds. I hope to have another (baby monitor) microphone near the nest box by the weekend.
Looks promising! When do they usually start nesting?
ReplyDeleteThat looks like it might be some serious interest!
ReplyDeleteHello Glo. They will get more serious about choosing a site late February / March and nesting from late March to June. A long way to go yet.
ReplyDeleteHello Wilma. It, or they, are definitely giving some serious thought to the box though it is early days yet.
ReplyDeleteYep John, I'd agree with Glo and Wilma... very promising :-D
ReplyDeleteHello Shirl. I can but hope. When it eventually gets round to performing the 'nest box shuffle' then I know it is very interested in the box.

Hi John, I think it is lovely that they start house hunting this early, at least they believe Spring is really on the way! I loved hearing the bird sound accompaniment too, I don't find the Collared Dove's call monotonous at all, I think it is rather soothing and very reminiscent of warm, lazy Summer days...and that has to be good! :)
ReplyDeleteDo you think that at this time of the year, December and January that they are just finding a sheltered place to roost rather than prospecting for a nest?
ReplyDeleteHello Jan. It is exciting seeing how some birds are gradually pairing up. The Blue Tiys do seem to put a lot of time and effort in finding just the right place to nest.
ReplyDeleteThe Collared Doves are all right in small doses. We have so many round here their repeated call gets very tiring, especially when they sit on the chimney and it echoes into the room for hours on end.
Ah. Warm, lazy Summer days seem so far away in both directions this time of year.
Hello Matron. The box was used as a roost twice last Winter but not this one. According to various birdy authorities they do start investigating possible nesting sites months before actually choosing one.
