The Charge of the Spiked Brigade

I know there have been at least two different Hedgehogs visiting most nights but last night was the first time this year  I have seen two at the same time. Early on there was a bit of a kerfuffal while I was filming but it took place in a shady area where it was too dark for the camera to see. That ended with each hog going its own way. A short while later one returned and was quietly crunching dried mealworms when the second returned.

This time it was the charge of the spiked brigade and the first (Horatio I think) ended up sat in a water bowl:

As is normal only pride was hurt and once again each Hedgehog went its separate way. Once they had departed I put fresh water in the bowl and some more mealworms in the feeder in case one or more returned. It was about 4 a.m. when one dropped by for a quick snack before their dawn bedtime.

If you enjoy seeing and reading about Hedgehogs then I recommend a visit to the blog Twosie the Hedgehog where there is always plenty of hog activity.

  1. That was so funny John! what a brilliant tactic to roll up in a bowl - you really can't get barged out of the way! I was a bit concerned at first that he landed in the waterbowl head down and might have drowned!

  2. Hi John, we got a great laugh out of your hedgie clip, despite the fact that the poor laddie in the bowl got himself a bit wet. You get some wonderful hedgie clips, you know - I think back to the one where the hedgie tips the water in the water bowl up all over himself.
Thanks too for the mention :)

  3. It definitely made me laugh Matron. The Hedgehog seemed to fit exactly in the dog bowl.

  4. The upset bowl happened again last night Twosie. That was filmed on my camcorder but I haven't checked it yet. The bowl ups and smacks the hedgie on the nose so it tries to bite the rim of the dish in retaliation.

  5. That was absolutely hilarious John, I couldn't believe how much strength it used! I suppose it was the hog equivalent of getting thrown in the swimming pool :)

  6. We really shouldn't laugh at others misfortunes Jan but it was so funny to watch it still makes me laugh.

  7. Hi John,
Lovely film! Our hedgehog (Spikey, very original I know) has finally returned and is munching his way through the mealworms I put out every night. I am hopeful that I may get some footage or photo`s at some point!

  8. I hope this isn't a duplicate comment, as I thought I just posted one!

I think this shot into the bowl is a two-pointer! It is quite startling and humorous to see the hedgehog plop into the bowl just so. If you ever need a pick me up, this video would cheer you up in a minute :)

  17. They must have Keith as the bowl complete with hedgehog gets moved at one point.

  18. They are Adrian - not the shy creature which always seems to curl up in a ball that we expect.
