Typical English Summer Weather?

Today didn't turn out quite as expected. I thought it was going to be a fine day and was hoping to visit Covenham Reservoir. The morning started out a bit on the damp side and there was a cool breeze for much of the day.

Suddenly, about 3.30 in the afternoon it got so dark I had to switch the room lights on. Then the rain started accompanied by thunder and lightning which got closer and closer. The rain became heavier until it was like a tropical storm.

This continued for about three quarters of an hour in which time 0.85  inches (22mm) of rain was recorded. As a result my lawn which had been free of standing water started to become a lake.

These sorts of short sharp storms are not rare in the summer months but I usually expect them after many days of glorious sunshine.

  1. Oh my goodness!! I have seen the severe storms and flash floods, people have experienced today, on the news this evening. I actually wondered about you but then realised they were talking about Leicestershire not Lincolnshire but it seems you had it too! It was forecast for us but apart from the occasional overcast skies and about three drops of rain at one point we actually had quite a gloriously sunny day, I think we were very lucky for a change :-) Maybe you will have some ducks on your 'lake' by morning!! What did Penny think of the thunder?

    1. I've known it worse Jan and fortunately with the wind and reasonable temperatures the garden water is already receding.

Penny wasn't too bad. She must have been used to some noise when racing through she is easily startled by sudden loud noises. With the thunder - she went to bed and I gave her her soft toys to look after her ;)

  2. That's an impressive amount of rain to come down all at once - and yes, rather like one of our tropical storms. btw my lawn is looking like that last photo of yours - except we didn't get this rain as big storms but constant over the last 5-6 days and we ended up with close to 6 inches in the old scale.

    1. Thank goodness those sort of downpours are rare and usually short lived in this area. I think I would rather get it all over and done with in a short time rather than days and days of miserable wet weather. 6 inches is a mighty amount of water!

  3. My goodness John, any higher and it would have been in the bungalow.

    1. Not quite that bad Roy, I'm pleased to say. Can't be seen from the photo but the lawn is at least six inches lower than the base of the building.
