Red Blobs

While out walkies I noticed two sets of three red blobs on the footpath. Both sets have what looks like the top of a metal spike at the centre:

I would guess these have something to do with surveying. Centre mark for a theodolite or more probably nowadays a GPS receiver, but the puzzle is what is being surveyed and why?
I tried some searches on Google, even uploaded the photo, but nothing the same was found.

  2. I think that pin indicates a fixed level, if my memories of working for my stepfather aren't faulty

  3. Showed it to my stepdad, it is a station for a theodolite!

    1. Thanks for that Simon. With the three dots I thought of a tripod though they seemed very close together. The red is presumably just a representation. They are too large to indicate an accurate position, unlike the metal pin.

  4. Yes they are called Survey Control Stations John which can be either temporary or permanent. The paint must be biodegradable and the nails are stainless steel.
    I looked it up otherwise I wouldn't have a clue.{:))

    1. Thanks Roy. I saw a couple of men working with some equipment right next to the church so I wonder what they are surveying.

  5. Yes they are survey points the ones I've seen have a washer under the pin head.
