Harvest Moon

Oh, Shine on, shine on, harvest moon
Up in the sky;
I ain't had no lovin'
Since April, January, June or July.
Snow time, ain't no time to stay
Outdoors and spoon;
So shine on, shine on, harvest moon,
For me and my gal.

 Harvest Moon 01

A pity the Moon ended up over exposed.
Lovely coloured clouds again almost makes up for it.

I did take three shots with different exposures.
When I tried to combine them as an HRD photo it was a dismal failure.
Time to explore the capabilities of Affinity Photo.
Found out how to make the background of the darkest one transparent.
That just left the Moon with some features showing.
Next found out how to add that to the above photo to make a composite.

 Harvest Moon 01c2

Harvest Moon, the full Moon closest to the northern autumnal equinox.
In days gone by farmers could use these bright Moonlit nights to continue harvesting at night.

  1. That worked rather well.
    If you have the NIK filters still then I would try using one of them on the darkest one, either single image HDR or the one where you can select just bits to alter.

  2. Adrian: The darkest one was completely black apart from the Moon. The facility I found in Affinity looks useful. It uses an import called Place. The new photo is placed on top of the photo being processed. What is useful is it is a layer which can be moved, rotated and zoomed to fit where you want.

    1. Their is always information in a black bit but never in white. Assuming you shot in RAW.

    2. Adrian: Yes, shot in RAW but the information in the black is minimal, very noisy and tends to have a strong colour cast.

  3. Beautiful, John, so dramatic.

    1. Wilma: Thank you. I was fortunate to catch it before it got too high in the sky to see and background.

  4. Lovely pictures. I've never been able to get a decent shot of the moon

    1. Simon: Thank you. The exposures are normally too long to hand hold. I use a sturdy tripod and remote shutter control to minimise camera shake.

  5. Very atmospheric and so beautiful :) Managed to get good moon photos with the Canon SX50 bridge but haven't succeeded so far with the Panasonic Lumix bridge - need to try different settings I think.

    1. RR: So unusual to see so much colour with the Moon. I took at least 15 photos at all sorts of setting but still didn't find one I was totally satisfied with. Not so easy at night either.
