Unidentified Bug

Just about to drop some items in our recycle bin when I spotted this minibeast

Unknown Bug DSCN8881

Body length about 7mm

It even let me take a bit of video

Spent quite a while looking at scores of pictures trying to identify it.
Is it an instar of some shieldbug?

If any visitor could help with the identification that would be brilliant.

  1. I wonder if it could be one of these. https://www.amateurgardening.com/news/brown-stink-bugs-pose-threat-uk-11107. The antennae seem similar but the markings on the edge of the shield are not as clear. If you google images "brown stink bugs uk" there are some variations there.

  2. Dave: That's two votes for the brown stink bug. Someone suggested that in the comments on YouTube. I had checked and noticed the lack of markings but if it isn't fully grown they may not be showing yet. BTW it didn't kick up a stink when I put the camera a few inches away from it.

  3. Dave could be correct. My suggestion is for a Mirid Bug nymph. It's wings aren't formed yet. Ask on I-Spot. Saves going mad searching. It's about Mirid size.

    1. Thickethouse: Many thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. You could be correct. It looks very similar to a couple of photos I've seen of that one.

  5. I hope you find out what it is - my first thought was shieldbug and possibly an instar. Have checked my Field Studies Council Shield Bug guide and I can't see any on there that look the same but the chart only shows adults.

    1. RR: As soon as I spotted it I thought of a shieldbug. There are lots of photos of adults but it's much harder to find photos of the instars. You usually need to know what it is first to find those.
