Here Be Dragons

Well, one dragon(fly) anyway.
My first spotting this year.

Southern Hawker Dragonfly DSCN9816

A Southern Hawker seen dashing around the tall hedge next to the cricket field.
They usually arrive here about this time of year to feed on the small insects.

  1. I can never tell between them and migrant hawkers - always think migrant hawkers are bluer

    1. Simon: Southern appears to have bolder yellowish markings on head and thorax. Otherwise they are very similar.

  2. A super photo - we had a dragonfly in the garden recently but no chance of getting a photo as it was whizzing around everywhere!

    1. RR: Thank you. It was fortunate it rested for a while. Other days they haven't stopped flying while I've seen them.
